We care about pets. We care about nutrition. We care about ingredients. We care about giving and we care about getting it all done right. It all began with a dog named Lucy. Eric & Breann Shook, Owners & Founders of Grandma Lucy's, have been crafting freeze-dried pet food and treats since 1999. It all started with their English Cocker Spaniel, Lucy. She was a picky eater and refused to eat what was given to her at that time. With Breann's love for her dog and her entrepreneurial spirit, she set off on a mission to create an all-natural approach to dog food. Now, over 20 years later, Breann and Eric have provided Grandma Lucy's freeze-dried recipes to millions of animals across the country. 1999 Eric and Breann always joke about the fact that their first freeze dryer was older than both of them! This freeze dryer was small but mighty, and got them through the first years of business. Fun fact: Eric and Breannʼs first 3 freeze-dryers were named after their dogs Lucy, Ali, and Bradley. Fun fact: Eric and Breann used to bribe their friends with pizza and beer to help hand roll those meatballs! *Dressing the part in the early 2000 ! s Fun fact: Everyone in the office has an open bag on their desk and theyʼre not just for the dogs ;) 2001 When the dynamic duo were not out selling treats and meeting fellow pet lovers, they were in the company’s kitchen rolling meatballs by hand, baking, freeze-drying and packaging. They could barely keep up with production all while going to college! It was a lot but they wouldn’t change a minute of it. 2007 2007 was a big year for Grandma Lucy’s! Due to the pet food recalls of 2007, Eric and Breann created their first complete and balanced pet food - Artisan. As if that wasn’t enough, they also released their 100% USDA Organic, Human-Grade Baked Treats and the bear was born! 2011 Pureformance was created for a much needed diet that supports, not only energetic dogs, but also diabetic dogs. It has a low glycemic index and releases energy into the body slowly to help maintain a consistent energy level. Finding solutions is what we do! LET US TELL YOU THELET US TELL YOU THE ofof2013 An opportunity came up that Eric and Breann were not expecting. A human-food manufacturing facility went up for sale and it was perfect! The facility was purchased along with 3 new freeze-dryers! It allowed us to double our freeze-drying capacity, making the move one of the best decisions ever made. 2019 To celebrate our 20-year anniversary, Breann and her daughter Alex, took giving back to a whole new level with the formation of Project Pet RAK. What started as a way to reward others for completing random acts of kindness, and supporting pets with food donations, has grown to so much more, allowing PPRAK to help strengthen human-animal bonds worldwide! 2020 Eric celebrates over 20 years in the pet industry and wins the Pet Age Icon Award! This annual award honors those pet professionals with long-term passion and success within the pet food community. 2021 3 Bears, the company’s first grain-inclusive dog food recipe was released! To support groups close to The Shook’s hearts, each bag of food helps build self-confidence in children through reading to dogs. “We are grateful to be able to give back to service animals and their people who give so much.” 2022 Breann Shook wins the JPMorgan Chase & Co. “Women on the Move” Award from OC Business Journal. This award recognizes women who have made significant contributions to their organizations, their professions, and the Orange County community. 2023 The human-animal bond is strong and improves people and their animal’s quality of life. This important bond lead Breann, their daughter Alex, and two other amazing pet lovers to create the non-profit Locks4Paws. They have opened pet food banks filled with Grandma Lucy’s food across the USA! When we started Grandma Lucy’s, Eric and Breann Shook - Founders, Grandma Lucy’s who would have known that our first treat recipe made in our home kitchen would lead us to where we are today? Thank you to everyone that has supported us along the way and we look forward to many more years to come!RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CALIFORNIA FACILITYFACILITY Family Owned & Operated x SINCE 1999 OurOurUSDA RAW INGREDIENTSMINIMALLY PROCESSEDFLASH FROZEN FREEZE-DRIEDBLENDINGPACKAGING SHIPPING TEST & HOLD We remain commiteed to using the highest quality, human-grade, USDA inspected and approved ingredients from trusted suppliers and farms. Grandma Lucy’s requires all of our suppliers to sign a Vendor Promise stating that the ingredients are processed in a human -grade facility, the country of origin, are free of chemicals and preservatives, each batch is tested for salmonella, lead, e-coli, mercury, arsenic, coliform, and melamine in accordance with human food standards. Skilled staff inspect all incoming and outgoing products for quality assurance. Our kitchen then carefully cuts the meat, fish and poultry for each formula. The foundation of our outstanding food rests in the whole food ingredients. We do not use any meals or by-products, only ingredients with names you can pronounce. This ensures that every bite is whole food nutrition. Meats, fish, poultry, etc. are placed on metal trays and loaded into our walk-in freezers where they will freeze for 24 hours. After 24 hours the ingredients are now ready to be freeze-dried. Our gentle freeze-drying process is achieved at an extremely low vacuum pressure and temperature. Our gentle freeze-drying process removes 92% of the water contained in our ingredients, leaving a food that is lightweight, compact, shelf-stable and preservative-free. Freeze- drying, as compared to other drying processes such as dehydrating or air drying, is better at retaining the characeristics of the raw food. It is well known that the process retains more flavor components and results in reconstituted textures that most closely approximate the original meats and vegetables. Careful attention is given to our mixing and blending process. All ingredients are hand- sorted, measured, and inspected before being placed in our custom tumblers. These tumblers allow the whole food ingredients to mix evenly without damage. Larger pieces of freeze-dried meat, poultry and fish are finely ground and added to each blend to ensure a complete and balanced diet in every bite. The freeze-dried blend is gravity-fed from our custom tumblers and sealed in moisture and oxygen proof packaging to ensure freshness until opened. When water is replaced, the food retains its original fresh flavor, aroma, texture and appearance. Our blends are then case packed and stored until testing can be done. We test our products prior to shipping as required for our USDA inspections. Test results from our suppliers are also received prior to the raw ingredients entering our facility. This double testing process allows us to monitor and check the quality and safety each step of the way, from farm to final packaging. Once test results are confirmed cases are carefully palletized. They are then sent to one of our distributors across the United States, Canada, Central America and Asia, finally landing in a pet specialty retail store for pets to enjoy.
